Experience
Past employment has included both government (US Environmental Protection Agency/US Public Health Service,  1962-1982) and industry (Northrop Services/ManTech Environmental Technology, Inc. 1982-1994). At EPA he was Director of the Toxicology Division, that was responsible for both the animal and human toxicology program addressing the potential health risks associated with exposure to environmental chemicals. Following retirement from the EPA/US Public Health Service, he joined the staff of Northrop/ManTech Corp. as Vice-president and Chief Scientist. There his responsibilities were to provide direction and to oversee the toxicology program, tracking and support of future business development.
Since 1994, Dr. Gardner, has been President of Inhalation Toxicology Associates,  a consulting company that provides consulting services to several agencies including US EPA, NIEHS, NIH, NASA, NIOSH, WHO, DOD, to private industry and prestigious  law firms.  He has chaired and been on numerous advisory panels for the National Academy of Science in the area of environmental health and toxicology.
He is a board certified Fellow in Toxicology and has and has had academic appointments at Duke University,  North Carolina State University and University of Massachusetts. He has been on the National Academy of Science, National Research Council since 1989 and has been Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Toxicology. He is presently an Associate Editor on the journal of Immunotoxicology and  on the Editorial Board of Mechanisms and Methods.. He is co-editor of Target Organ Toxicology Series (15 volumes) and editor of 4 volumes of  Toxicology of the Lung. Throughout his career he has published over 250 peer reviewed manuscripts and book chapters. He is the founding Editor of the Journal of Inhalation Toxicology.   
He has received the life time outstanding achievement award from the Society of Toxicology in the areas of both inhalation toxicology and in immunotoxicology, several EPA scientific and technological achievement awards and the Meritorious Service Award from the US Public Health Service.  He has served as President and Vice-president of Society of Toxicology Specialty Sections including (1) Metals, (2) Inhalation Toxicology and (3) Immunology.  He has also been elected as President of the North Carolina Chapter of the Society of Toxicology.
